...started with us having to describe what our personal favourite chair would be and look like. In addition, we had to imagine what kind of person and what our relationship would be with the chair if it where a person. Arrival at the Vitra campus; the workshop took on an interesting turn of things. We had to swap our chair descriptions with a chosen partner. Asking further questions and talking about the chair was not allowed.

The chair my group partner and good friend "Andy" described was the following:

"My favourite chair is for camping. More precisely, camping with a van, camper, bus... Whatever vehicle you are travelling with and sleep in. So, a major criterion is space or rather the storage capability. Furthermore, it should not be a typical chair, it should be a chair to relax in. That means it is mainly about "sitting in the chair and doing nothing”, about chilling. It is also important that it is made in such a way that you are comfortable for a longer period of time. It does not have to have
legs, it could also be made for the floor. As a camper you are connected to nature. This connection and also the integration of the chair into the environment should be visible in the design. Another consideration would be to integrate the environment directly with the chair."

Andy's personification of his chair was his ideal self, one that is in synch with himself and can master every situation with a calm, mature and thoughtful mind. The combination of his personification of his chair, his description and my personal inseparable thoughts and approach on design which is always questioning things, resulted in the following chair:

No chair whatsoever. No product. No Design.

Because in this case I was convinced it was not needed.

The world is already filled with all the chairs one could imagine. Also, none would have sufficed Andy’s expectations.

My result was a concept :

When one is on the road with an old van one has tools with him. The concept was to build a temporary chair using the tools in possession and the materials found at the current surrounding time and again. Through that one can truly feel connected and learn how to be more like Andy's ideal self: one who can handle every situation.

The Chair Examples shown have been built with Andy’s van tools including a storage bag and with the materials found on site on the Vitra campus.
